The Tribal Wheel 3.0: Underworld

Welcome back to From the Gauntlet: Tribal Wheel 3.0 edition! Two weeks ago, I talked about the Overworld and its ideology. Today it’s the Underworld’s turn. That’s right, the bad boys. The tribe that isn’t afraid to play dirty. Like the last Tribal Wheel, I am going to talk about the mentality of the tribe, and how the mechanics of Underworld cards show the complexity of the tribe itself.

But, before all that fun stuff, for those of you who don’t know, I completely stole this idea from Mark Rosewater. He is the head of R&D for Magic: the Gathering, and who wrote over 20 articles to flesh out each color of Magic. They all help put together the “Color Pie” which explains what each color is, and what they can and cannot do. It is the basis for my “Tribal Wheel” series. While I don’t have the insider’s know-how of TC Digital’s R&D, I have had quite a few discussions with the designers there, and I’d like to consider myself somewhat of an authority when it comes to many aspects of Chaotic. Although I do steal the name, I can’t live up to what it represents. Mark Rosewater is the top guy over at R&D. He has spent more than a decade working on Magic and probably knows the game better than anyone else on the planet. I can’t match that with Chaotic. I’ve just been a player happy to run my mouth for the past three years. This is nothing but my own observations about the tribes.

Unlike last time where I just blurted out all of the Underworld’s mechanics, I am going to make comments about Underworlders to start to identify them, and under each of these comments I’ll bring up mechanics that support these characteristics. See? Middle school English comes in handy when you want to write an article about a card game.

Here are some general characteristics of the Underworld tribe:

Underworlders are, on average, strong

It’s obvious, but important to note. No tribe has as many high energy Creatures as the Underworld has. Go ahead and look, the Underworld has the most Creatures with 60 or higher energy. The Overworld comes in a close second, but Underworld has a clear lead. Underworld is a master of Fire, the power element. From the very beginning of Chaotic, the Underworld was the best at maxing out fire damage. If you want to have the highest damage per attack output in your deck, go with fire, and if you want to use fire, no one is better than the Underworld.

Underworlders are violent and destructive

You might even say that they are 'reckless'. Underworlders go on tantrums from time to time. They are full of emotion. This theme is very pronounced throughout their cards. They have Mugic that breeds emotion. Song of Fury is a perfect example of their use of raw emotion. They understand the power of rage, and use it well.

Recklessness is a mechanic that says a lot about the Underworld. Don’t confuse it with Warbeasts’s recklessness. They are two totally different things that represent two separate themes. Recklessness is an extent of the emotion theme. They’ll do anything for a higher damage output, even if I it means fighting with an uncontrolled rage. Underworlders love big things that can smash.

They like to destroy things. Underwolders have more than 10 cards (not counting Underworld themed battlgear) that get rid of battlegear from the board, or benefit from having them in the discard pile. If there is something they want to smash, they will. End of story.

I mentioned earlier how the Overworld has a protective theme. They have effects that grant their Creatures bonuses if Creatures are on their side of the board. Underworlders have the exact opposite. Surprising, right? Kaal thrives in an aggressive deck. Underworlders have no problem bringing the fight to you.

Underworlders are selfish

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Survival of the fittest means that sometimes Creatures don’t make the cut. If you can benefit from their weakness, why not capitalize on it? Underworlders have a habit of…well sacrificing their own Creatures. In other games, this isn’t as a big of a thing as it is in Chaotic. Your Creatures are your life. When they are all gone, you’ve lost. So, when an Underworld sacrifices one of their own, you better hope it’ll be enough to get a lead or else you’ll be even more behind.

Underworlders like to mess with you

I have been painting the Underworld up until this point to be full of big selfish brutes. While it is true that there are quite a few of them (and that they are pretty darn good at what they do!) there is another side to them. They can be pranksters at times, if you think about some of their abilities. They have a myriad of abilities that have no purpose but to mess with their opponent. Have elements? Well not any more. Want to gain those elements back? Too bad. Need some healing? Maybe next time.

The very first way Chaotic explored this was through the Intimidate mechanic. Flavorwise, it shows how scary these Creatures are. To the point where other Creatures fighting them can’t fight as well as they normally can. This also demonstrates how they like to mess with their opponent. What better way to mess you up than to lower your stats and mess up your attacks?

Phelphor is a great example of this. Sure, he turned out to be a weird M’arrillian squid thingy, but he came out as an Underworlder first. Anyway, Phelphor has the ability to move your opponent’s Creatures. This is a great example of an Underworlder playing a joke. Think of it like the Cinnamon Switch prank. Your opponent thinks he has his Creatures the way he wants them, and then unexpectedly, Creatures switch places and he gets something that he didn’t bargain for.

Direct damage

Now you might be thinking, why didn’t he bring up dealing damage? Why wouldn’t it be one of the first things he said? If the Overworld has the market cornered on healing, why wouldn’t you bring up how the Underworlders like to deal damage to other Creatures? Now, you’re right, I didn’t say anything about dealing damage up until this point for two reasons. One, it fits into several of these categories. It shows off their raw power the Underworld possesses, how violent they are, and even to a degree how they want to mess with you and your army. And second, it is by far the most important traits about the Underworld. When talk about a powerful burn deck, you are probably thinking of Zamool burn right off the bat, not an Enre-Hep burn deck (that would even have to use an Underworld card to set it off properly).

Underworlders want to hit things, blast them, and burn what remains. They are in it for the kill. If an Underworlder doesn’t destroy a Creature in combat, it failed. That’s all there is to it. Underworlders live for the fight.

Above all things, this column was originally designed to write about decks. Talking about the Tribal Wheel is something that is completely unrelated to this, but something that I enjoy writing about. However, I also enjoy writing about decks:

That’s right! Another Zamool burn deck! It’s true that it is yet another burn deck based around Zamool, but there is a lot more going on than just engage with Zamool and then blow up the entire board with Mugic cards. First off, notice the most important part of this deck: the *Dread Tread. This, combined with several elements will keep you in control throughout the game.

The Early Game

If your opponent goes first, you can choose who does what. There is a reason why we have more than one Agitos in the deck (well, there are two, but we’ll get to that soon). If you want to get Zamool right off the bat, go ahead. If you want to protect him, go for it. It may even be a good idea to make your opponent attack Agitos to keep your fighters safe. Both are viable strategies, depending on what you are playing against.

This deck really shines if you get to go first. Sac on (or two, if you really need it) Bimowercycles and have Zamool jump to your opponent’s Mugic casters. Unlike Zamool, most Mugic casters can’t fight in combat, and they are even more hindered if they can’t play anything. So, you don’t have to waste your burn on them. If it really gets down to it, by all means, but don’t waste your Mugic by just playing them as soon as you enter combat. Let your attacks deal some damage and save your limited Mugic. However, feel free to burn out some of your opponents other Creatures that aren’t a part of combat. Guess what? Your first turn isn’t done. I hope you saved one squishy Mugic caster on the field for Zamool to finish off. By using Dread Tread, you save quite a lot of damage by having Zamool kill two Creatures himself instead of wasting Mugic to burn them from a distance. I said the Underworld doesn’t mind having to bring the battle to their opponent, right?

The End Game

The mid game is nonexistent. Not much happens, and since this deck will probably kill 2-5 Creatures in its first turn means we just skip over it. You have three fighters to beat what’s left of their army. It shouldn’t be too hard; you have a solid attack deck that you can manipulate since you should have a huge Creature advantage over your opponent at this point.

Card Choices

Here is the reasoning for using the cards in this deck over others:

1. Agitos, Eloquent Motivator. I usually use Ulmar in my burn decks for his high damage output and his endgame utility, but for this build I felt that controlling the board early on was more important. Having two gives my Creatures Intimidate Power and Courage 40, which makes winning challenges almost a certainty.

2. Castle Momark. This card is amazing for this deck. After the first turn, you should have a Mugic caster that isn’t doing much, or is out of Mugic counters. If a fighter or, heaven forbid, Zamool, you can easily bring him back. Not to mention you will be wiping your opponent’s board clean of weaker Mugic casters to sacrifice so they don’t benefit nearly as much.

3. Illusionary Lake. This is a card that I try to squeeze into a lot of decks that aren’t focused on water. You always should get initiative except for Invisibility abilities, and if your opponent is using water, you have a chance to really cripple them while this is face up on the field.

4. Bodal’s Arsenal. You always want to sac some of you battlegear early on in the game, so you will always have a battlegear and an unequipped Creature.

I've been hiding this for a couple months now, but around the time of my first deck building contest, I built a new deck that kind of trumps all of my other attempts as FTK decks. You have the ability to play and infinite number of mugic cards. That's right, you will never run out. How can this be? When did this happen? ...how?! To answre all of those questions in order: it just is, a few months ago (weren't you paying attention?) and you'll have to figure that one out on your own! I am giving NO HINTS OTHER THAN WHAT IS IN THIS POST. I made all of the other contests far too easy.

Here are some facts about the deck and some rules for y'all:

-It currently cannot be played online, a sad but true fact
-It could heal an infinite amount of life, deal an infinite amount of damage, or do almost anything you want to as many times as you would like to do it.
-It is a 6v6 master rules deck. Those are your limits, 6 REAL creatures, 6 mugic, 10 locations, and 20 attacks.
-You cannot choose which location you have unless you can guarantee that you can control it at least 95% of your games.
-You can assume that your opponent won't try to stop you, but he won't do anything for you either. This deck should work no matter what your opponent plays. You can't rely on a Heptagonal Hail for any extra counters, for example.

Hey guys, I'm sorry but I couldn't write anything this week. As of right now I am trudging through mountains of homework due in only two hours (and there really wasn't all that much procrastination involved, I swear!). This is something that I wrote a few weeks ago that was suppose to be the return piece for FTG, but directions have changed since then and I wanted to start of with the Tribal Wheel, which I will be continuing next week.

Hello, and welcome to the return of From the Gauntlet where we tour the creative side of this game by creating new and hopefully fun decks! And on this little journey, I am your trusty navigator, Occasus. For those of you who remember me, I do hope those memories are fond ones, but if this is your first time reading one of these, I hope you enjoy it!

Today I’ve made you guys an Inquisitor deck. I came up with this deck all the way back in December when the World Championships was right around the corner. Inquisitor deck concepts aren’t run of the mill. Sometimes, playing something that your opponents aren’t used to playing against is more valuable than playing a slightly strong, but more commonplace, deck. That is exactly what I wanted to achieve with this deck.

One to all of the fun little features of this deck. We have the Fal’Makin and Milla’Iin combo so we can keep bringing back mugic each turn, but it gets a little more complex than that. Before we can start bringing back our mugic, we need to use all of the mugic counters on our creatures.

The Early Game

In the first few turns, you actually don’t want to get Fal’Makin Engaged. He is better saved for the late game. Get into combat with your Tartareks. You can use Magmon’s Bi-Mowercycle to jump over the front line, or if that only leads to more fights with big fighters, you still shouldn’t have too much to worry about. Use the nourishing nocturnes to sacrifice Magmon, Lord Van Bloot if you aren’t worried about Milla’Iin being attacked, or a Tartarek that already flipped up his Destructazooka. Then you can use Psionic Serenade to really deal some damage to any creature you have trouble with.

The Mid Game

The mid game is where this deck is at its weakest. You may have used up your powerful mugic, but still have mugic counters left on your creatures if you used Fal’Makin’s ability. There is more than enough mugic to cast to get read of your mugic counter reserves in the first couple of turns. Once all of your mugic counters are gone, you get back one mugic a turn so make it count. Psionic Serenade is a great pick, but you are limited to how many minions you have left in your discard pile, so you should to bring back a Nurishing Nocturne every now and again.

The End Game

You have the potential to cast upwards of 4 psionic serenades in one game. Make sure you get the most of them! If you win each of those battles (getting 65-70 damage to them right off the bat probably will do that for you) that still leaves two more creatures you need to deal with. Maybe they will be mugic casters, or maybe you didn’t have the time to return the psionic serenades, you don’t know how the end game will work out. It would be wise to avoid engaging any creatures on your turn. This will lessen the combats in between the mugic boon on your turns.

Counters

Just like every deck, this one can run into some problems. Decks with Cromaxx will severely mess with you. Your psionic serenades are useless against him, so you will need to out muscle him. Again, this is not something that this deck is all that great at. Luckily, you still have Tartareks that are good enough fighters, and Nourishing Nocturne which are a great way to get the edge over your opponent.

Conclusions

I’m pretty fond of this deck. It’s a deck your opponent isn’t used to fighting and that is good enough to play right there.

The Tribal Wheel 3.0: Overworld

Out of anythingI have ever written, by FAR the favorite has been the Color Wheel. Since I completely ripped off the idea from Mark Rosewater and Magic the Gathering, I don’t deserve too much credit. So I will be posting five short articles for each tribe with an added deck loyal to the values of the tribe.

What is the Overworld known for?

High Wisdom: Although this isn’t set in stone in every situation, but Overworld’s main stat is wisdom and its main element is water.

High Mugic Counters: No tribe can match the Overworld in terms of raw mugic ability. They have the more creatures with 2 and 3 mugic counters than any other tribe.

Healing: No one can compete with the amount of healing mugic and abilities that the Overworld has. From Song of Resurgence to Donmar, Tablet Translator, healing is what makes the Overworld the Overworld.

Elements: Each tribe has two or three elements that it focuses on mostly, and the Overworld is no exception, but you cannot overlook its focus on elementalists and element gain. too

Support X: Support X is an ability that is chiefly tied to Overworlders. Although there aren’t that many creatures with support nowadays, it has still been unique to the Overworld.

Counter Mugic: Every tribe has some way to deal with mugic and abilities, but Overworld has more counter mugic than anyone else.

Mugic Recycle: Two incarnations of Najarin and Mugic Reprise, make the Overworld is great at letting you reuse your mugic.

Reduce Damage: Although Mipedians are the king at reducing attacks, and reflecting them as well as mugic, Overworld does have a trend of reducing damage to their creatures. Symphany of Shielding, Lomma and Illiar all reduce damage.

Stat Reset: Less of a huge theme and more of a quirk, a couple creatures have the ability to reset either their own stats or elements to their scanned values.

Even though the Overworld may not have a monopoly on all of these abilities, they all make up a common theme. Each one of these abilities is insignificant while by itself, but when put together, they begin to create the Overworld’s identity as a tribe.

Overworlders Are Survivors

Above all things, Overworlders are survivors. Their most prominent ability is healing. If a creature is hurt, they will be healed. One huge strategy that is often used is to simply outlast your opponent. If your are against someone who is playing Overworld, chances are that the battle won’t end as soon as you would like, because their creatures are going to last much longer than what their scanned energies would tell you. With the ability to bring back their mugic in combination with their high mugic counters, Overworlders are in it for the long haul.

Overworlders Believe in Unity

This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise for most of you. Overworld has a large portion of creatures whose sole purpose is to help other creatures. I doubt Donmar, Tablet Translator will be using his ability to heal himself as much as he heals all of his allied creatures around him. The Support ability encourages teamwork between your creatures. Keep them together, and as a group you will be stronger that the sum or your parts. If we go all the way back to the Dawn of Perim Block, I’d like to bring up both Raznus and Kinnianne, the Ambassadors to the Danian and Mipedian tribes. The Overworld knows a thing or two about Diplomacy. Overworlders are firm believers in the united we stand, divided we fall mentality.

Overworlders Are a Defensive Tribe

After looking through all of this tribes mugic, I noticed that there isn’t a single purely offensive mugic out of any of them. In fact, only two could deal damage to an opposing creature, and one gave you the option to heal your creature instead! The other, much more famous mugic card is Rhyme of the Reckless. This card is by far one of the strongest mugic for dealing damage to your opponent at a low cost, but it isn’t an offensive card. You need to be attacked first. You aren’t allowed to take action to deal damage to your opponent first with this card. You will also see a couple of cards that only effect your opponent’s creatures if they are on your side of the battleboard. Cards like Hornsabre and Korg emphasize the Overworld’s desire to be defensive.

I tried to keep this deck within the themes of the Overworld that we went over in this article. You have a lot of healing in this deck that you can use to keep Maxxor alive, and even if he falls you can bring him back with Castle Momark.

You should attack with Maxxor early on in the game. It’s as simple as that. He’s your best fighter, and keeping him alive and the combat long will give you a leg up. You can use Symphony of Shielding and Refrain of Denial to help Maxxor and your mugic casters last longer. You may have Najarin on the front lines, so you’ll need to make use of Lomma’s defender. Keeping her alive to protect Karraba and Najarin is a must.

Outside of that, there isn’t much more to this deck. Make sure you keep combats as drawn out as you can while Maxxor is engaged and remember to use the Mipedian Balladeer’s Flutes with Karraba and Najarin!

Why Chaotic (and other games) Are Important

"Games are important. Games matter. When you play a game - any game - you’re using your imagination to bring a world to life, and that’s truly special, because while all destruction is essentially the same, when you create something, it’s different every single time. When you create something together, you’re building bonds with your fellow gamers that could last for your entire lives." -Wil Wheaton (click here for a link to his blog post)

I started this blog post off by stealing a quote from Wil Wheaton, a famous actor who starred in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Although he was talking about role-playing games, it still holds a lot of weight when you use it to talk about trading card games like Chaotic. When people not familiar with trading card games looks at Maxxor card, to them, it looks no different from a Chaor or even Bodal. But to us, we not only see the words printed in the card, but we also see how cards interact with one another in the giant exchange of ideas that we call the metagame.

Most people don't bother to understand trading card games, and often lump them together with a standard 52 card deck which already has that connection to gambling. And for that reason, most school ban cards from class without understanding what they really are.

Chaotic Inspires Creativity

When you build your own deck, or come up with your own combos, you are being creative. Einstein was a firm believer that creativity is more important than knowledge. It doesn't matter if you know every card, if you have no imagination, you will never be able to make your own deck, or even put your own twist on existing decks. Imagination is the ability to think or something that no one else has thought of before. Education focuses so much on learning that they forget that creativity and imagination are just as important for whatever you choose to do with your life after you finish school. Chaotic not only encourages this, but teaches it to you as well.

Chaotic Teaches Problem Solving

The game of Chaotic is a huge game of tactics. In the beginning of the game, you are given a very fixed amount of resources (Creatures, battlegear, mugic and a 20 build point attack deck). The winner of the game is the person who can best utilize their own resources while, at the same time, remove the resources of their opponent. In order to master the game, players need to looks at every situation and determine whether or not casting a mugic now will benefit them more than if they save it for later. Do you want to cast Song of Resurgence to save your Tangath Toborn, or do you want to save it so you can heal your Maxxor for a bigger fight in hopes that the mugic will give you the win.

Chaotic Helps You Become More Adaptive

One very important and trademark quality of trading card games is the adaption of random chance in game play. Things change. Often. If you have this great and amazing strategy that you think is unbeatable, but your opponent plays a move that you weren't expecting at all, if you want to still salvage a win out of the game, you need to be ready to make quick and tough decisions on the fly. If I've learned anything from playing chaotic, it's that players will often think of things that you aren't ready for. Even if you are surprised, it isn't the end of the game. You can think of a way to win. There is always a way to win if you look hard enough.

Chaotic Encourages Players to Interact with One Another

Do you know how many people became friends because of this game? How people, separated by hundreds of miles and sometimes sharing nothing other than this game have come together and become friends. Do you know how many facebook friends invites I have received? (Sorry, but I'm not accepting anyone else right now) The chaotic forums has so many posts each and every day of people talking in open discussion about this game. That is interaction. People are sharing ideas and improving on one another strategies. I suppose I could have also labeled this section 'Chaotic Encourages Teamwork'.

Final Thoughts

I have thought about writing a small piece like this (rough and unedited as it my be) about a game that does mean a good deal to me. People see games and disregards them without much though. In reality, they should see games and understand their value. There is a lot to say about the importance of games as a whole, and Chaotic is a very big part of that.

We are approaching a new benchmark on my blog. We are only about 9000 hits away from reaching 300,000 views of my blog! Like with all of the other big numbers, I'll be giving away a free ultra rare card to whomever gives me a screen shot of the 300,000th hit counter to me in my PM box back at chaoticgame.com FIRST. Since there is a little delay with people viewing my blog and the counter going up, there is a chance that more than one of you will see the 300,000 marker, but I'll probably do a raffle for another card for anyone else who sees it.

Card of the Week: Uksum!

Uksum!

Uksum is one of my favorite creatures that came out of Forged Unity, and that's saying a lot compared to some of the amazing cards that were in the set.

Even though he has a low scanned energy, he can easily have a higher energy than any of the creatures in your army. If you put him in an Army of nothing but high energy creatures, you can easily get his energy up to 90 or 100, but the fun doesn't end there. One VERY important thing to remember about Uksum is that his scanned energy tops out at 25, which means you can cast Melody of the Meek and make him last 9 attacks guaranteed. And I have more, give him a Kha'rall Husk Armor and you're looking at a 140 energy creature who can't take more than 10 points of damage from any source, mugic or attack. A combo like this can shut down decks that rely on high damage dealing attacks, invisibility strike decks, but sadly not burn decks. Unless you can stop your opponent from dealing even small amounts of damage to him before he sees combat, he isn't going to last that long.

You can use these same combos with his brainwashed side. He's a 65 energy Kha'rall who can't be burned as easily, and you can still give him the 50 energy boost from the Husk Armor and combo Melody of the Meek. You can even give him a shard to give him another element and defender to help our the rest of your team. Even though you can't get his energy as high as you could with hie first ability, you are more more adaptable with his battlegear choices of lower energy creatures.

Show me a player who undervalues garv, and I'll show you one misinformed chaotic player! Ever since he came out all the way back in the Dawn of Perim block, he's been a force to be reckoned with. This card is a bit of nostalgia since one of the very first blog posts was talking about a nifty card combo of Garv and Orb of Foresight.

Flipping battlegear is a HUGE ability. This one creature can nullify a heptadd's crown, get rid of a Weightless Energy Vessel, let you reuse a destructazooka, or let you use any battlegear of a creature who hasn't seen combat yet. I know that I've made several decks with this creature, including the deck I played at worlds.

Talisman of the Mandiblor

This is one of the best battlegears to have ever been printed in the game. You can use it to do things much more magnificent that just bringing back a fighter. Here are some of the awesome added bonuses you can get other than just some regular old mandiblor:

1. Brainwashed Tabaal, more infections.

One of the Danian's key abilities is infection. There are a million and one ways to use it. Infect ridiculous amounts of creatures and you can use Strain of Infection to get more mugic counters, get a ridiculously powered Nimmei, or you can go the Filandar route. Equip this to your Tabal, sacrifice a madiblor and then bring it back with Talisman just to sacrifice it again!

2. Compost decks, you best friend

What could be worse than two fully powered up Neekwins after you got all of those compost creatures in the discard pile? How about four?

3. The Queen!

Let's not forget every time a mandiblor is sent to the discard pile, Illexia will get a mugic counter. If you want to go the less flashy route, Talisman will also work with Wamma, Hive Ordnance.

Of course, these are only three of many ways to use this card. So, what do you guys think of it? Rate out of five like always!

Here's the scenario: You have your opponent down to nothing but his Maxxor, Protector of Perim, but you aren't much better off. You are down to nothing but an Chaor the Fierce and a Kopond, High Muge of the Hearth, and neither of them have any mugic counters. The active location is Prexxor Chasm, the Blight, not exactly the location you were hoping in this last battle to win the game. In a quick battle, your opponent's Maxxor defeats Chaor, but only barely since he is at 5 energy.

In a last ditch attempt to win, you place Prexxor Chasm in Maxxor's square at the end of the turn.

'Ello! Welcome to Card Talk. Some of my older followers will remember my old card of the week. While most of you probably know that I can't really keep up with that any more, I will hopefully get a few of these done before I go back to college.

This time I'll be talking about is Phelphor of the deep!

He is one of the more neglected M'arrillian out there, which makes me sad because his ability is one of the better abilities on a fluidmorpher.

Just think about it. Once he gets some counters, you control the entire battleboard. You choose who fights who, all you need to do move your opponent's creatures around and you can prevent your opponent from attack you, or you can attack your opponent's back row. Najarin isn't nearly as menacing now that you can fight him early on in the game.

There isn't much more to say about him. Using him, you can attack almost any of your opponent's creatures, and you can even keep your opponent's creatures a safe distance from your weak mugic casters.

If any of you remember, I also ask you guys to rate the card out of five for it's playablity. So, what would you rate it?

What?! An update? How can this be? It may be a sign of the apocalypse, but I have returned to the blogosphere to give you guys an update. This post is the beginning of a few things. The first is obviously the world championship, the next is obviously my blog updates, and the return of my column on tcdop.com. I am currently in Philadelphia, ready to participate in the Perim Tour tomorrow, and the World Championship the next day. I will hopefully keep you guys updated throughout the weekend, but I will at least do some sort of report in the near future about everything.

Let's talk about Elemental Denial

I've been on a Zenith of the Hive kick these past few days. I don't know why, but I've just rediscovered the set and I just love it! A great example of what I mean is with Elemental Denial. This uncommon from ZoTH can almost guarantee a win in several situations. With the metagame putting so much emphasis on elements, making an opponent lose one, let alone multiple elements, is a death sentence. Not to mention with the rule change around Element X and Fluidmorph no longer functioning if you have the corresponding element, this card can shut just about anyone down.

So, rate it out of 5 :).

This week's card is Vix'Ben

Ah, Vix'Ben, one of the most inventive uses for fluidmorph to ever come from the R&D lab at TC Digital. It's an ability that uses mugic counters, without actually paying mugic counters.

But, it is a lot more than just an interesting ability. It is both artistic and functional. Vix'Ben is escentially a reusable Refrain of Denial. Over the course of the game, you will probably counter more than a single mugic card, which means you will have at least one mugic card in your hand more than your opponent will. Chaotic is a numbers game, which means you should work to get yourself in a possition of power. More creatures, more mugic, or more build points in your attack deck will put you on the fast track of winning the match you're in.

So, rate him out of 10 :).

Card of the Week

Welcome back for what will hopefully be the first in a long line of installments of Chaotic Card of the Week! This week, lets talk about Choral of the Apparition.

This beautiful card is probably on of the biggest boosts for Danian Compost decks. Not only can you use it to get back one of your big fighters, but you also get to get a compost mandiblor and send it to the discard pile to get use of it's ability.

Some players may be turned off by the two counter cost, but it really isn't that big of a deal. If you have an Illexia in play, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. You got one counter before because one of your danians has to be in the discard pile, you get another counter by sacrificing another Mandiblor, and you will get another counter when the new Mandiblor that comes back is sent to the discard pile again. So, this mugic ends up paying for itself in the long run, so you should have no worries about playing it!

So what do you think of this card? Is it underpowered, overpowered, underplayed, over played? All constructive comments welcome :).

Chaotic card of the week

This week we'll be talking about Illusionary Lake.

I absolutely love this location. It it is a great location for any deck that does not use the water element. The location's first ability will be in effect before initiative is decided, so neither creatures will have the element water when it decides who gets to attack first. This means unless your opponent's creature has surprise, you will always get the initiative.

So this location is great for two reasons. The first is that you almost always get the initiative. The second is that your opponent loses the water element. This effect is even stronger thanks to the new rules involving element x.

So rate it out of five :).

This conjuror is a work of art. He is the ultimate protector of warbeasts. All other conjurors prevent the damage that warbeasts would deal to themselves, but Ailav goes one step further than that. He can prevent all forms of damage. This includes attacks, mugic, abilities, and even the recklessness damage that the warbeasts have.

Not only that, but he is a much more stable conjuror. He isn't a weak defenseless creature like the others. He has 50 energy, and two elements, which is a lot more than the other conjurors can say.

Rate him out of 5 :).

Chaotic Card of the Week

Welcome back to yet another Card of the Week! You guys aren't sick of me yet? :P

This week's card is Mipedian Balladeer's Flute

This is an interesting battlegear that I am particularly fond of. It is like a Mugician's Lyre on caffeine! Unlike Mugician's Lyre, you get to begin the game with this face up. So you can put this on a creature that will never see combat so you can get an extra mugic counter. Put this on a Karabba, and you will get an extra 30 points of healing!

Now, a big turn off of this battlegear is that your opponent also gets a mugic counter. This actually isn't a very big weakness. Most decks plan to have just enough mugic couters to pay for their mugic, but after they cast their mugic, there isn't anything left for them to use any counters on. So they get a counter, but they don't have any realy use for it :P.

Card of the Weel: April 10th

This week, let's delve into the new set of Turn of the Tide! I think the Levitaar is a great new battlegear to start talking about the latest expansion of Chaotic.

First off, it is a free 50 speed, which isn't going to hurt your creature at all. Second, it's ability is amazing. Most decks will be dealing you damage with every attack, and in an average battle, you opponent will be making just about as many attacks as you will. So, more or less, you will be dealing an average of five damage with every attack, which ends up making it better than any of the other pieces of battlegear that only five you Element 5. This gives the same damage potential, but for all attacks that deal damage, and you get an additional 50 speed.

So what do you think of it?

Oh, and if anyone can tell me the difference between the picture in the collection for this card, and the real life card, I'll give that player a free Ultimate Warstance code. Remember to give me your Chaotic username with your reply :).

Card of the Week-For Real this Time

Ok, well now that I have had my laughs, let's get on to the card of the week :).

This week's card is Arbeid

I love this guy. He is such a frustrating creature to be up against. He is like two Melody of Mirages in one creature! Plasma Arrows, Allmageddon, Supercooled Rain, all of these cards kneel before the powers of Arbeid. He can turn any of your opponent's large attacks into something as weak as a Spirit Gust attack.

Although he might not be much of a fighter, he is still going to be a great addition to your overworld team. He can save you upwards of 90 points of damage if used on the right attacks, which saves you more energy than a Karabba ever could. So think next time you decide not to put this uncommon overworlder into your team :).

Card of the Week-March 25

This week's card is Aftermath Feint. Aftermath Feint has seen some growth in popularity lately, and for good reason. Who doesn't like getting a new hand? Who doesn't like to get rid of both Incinerases you have been keeping in your hand since the beginning of the match, or maybe you are just looking to turn your Outwit into a Plasmaarrow? Whatever the case, Aftermath Feint is a card you might consider in your deck.

We have all been in one of those matches that you know you can't win. In a battle, I don't think a Karraba will stand up against a Gronmor. Chances are, you should use this time to prepare for upcoming battles, and what better way then with this card?

Not to mention the beautiful synergy with Bladez. Bladez turns this into a 15 damage attack, with a killer ability if things turn against you in a fight.

Bungle in the Jungle, CCTW-March 11

Welcome back for yet another card of the week! :)

This week we are going to celebrate a favorite location of mine: The Heart of the Jungle. No one likes it when their awesome overworld healing lineup is stopped dead in its tracks by a Gan'trak army. This location gives you a turn of safety. Chances are, your creatures have at least one stat that is higher than all of your opponent's stats, so if your opponent would start lowering your stats, he is signing his own creature's death warrent.

But I'm not saying that only overworlders can benefit from this sort of card. Any player who wants to show those darned M'arrillians a thing or two might find some use for this card. The Kha'rall's intimidate will backfire on themselves, and Gan'trak will only end up stopping his own creatures.

So, rate this location out of ten like always :).

Chaotic Card of the Week-March 4

This week's card is Agrino Jaldar.

Agrino Jaldar is an interesting creature. What he lacks in elements, he gains in ability! Minions are becoming a bigger and bigger part of the game, even if they aren't being played with M'arrillians. Most aggressive overworld decks play Gronmor, and many underworld decks will use either Brimflame, or Bladez, or both. Agrino Jaldar's attacks all deal extra damage to them, and you can make up for his lack of elements with a shard, or a destructozooka.

His brianwashed side is just as fun. If you guys hadn't noticed, brainwashed danians seem to like to fight infected creatures, and Agrino Jaldar isn't an exception! On top of dealing more to those creatures, he gains an additional 5 energy for all of your minions, so you can be sure he won't go in as a wimp waiting for hive to activate :).

This week, I want you guys to tell me which version (brainwashed or pure) that you guys think is best.

Now isn't this a fun little guy? 65 energy, 95 courage and 85 wisdom at his maximum, he is a pretty strong creature to begin with. Then you go into his awesome ability. Healing all of his damage can be a maximum of 60 energy if you use it right, and even more if you raise his energy with mugic, battlegear, or other card effects.

If you infect all of the creatures on the board (all 12 creatures) you will be able to use his ability 4 times. At 60 energy per heal, that is a total of healing 240 energy. Put him in the right deck, and you will be set for the entire match! :).

Wow, this is going to come up a lot later than I thought, but life sure gets in the way some times!

Let's talk about Mivindal. I personally like him. He pretty much gives you an extra copy of any mandiblor in your army. On top of getting an extra fighter for free, you get an additional mugic counter to cast one of your mugics if you need it.

Mivindal is the creature version of Talisman of Mandiblor, but you don't have to wait for him to be engaged so you can use his ability. This makes him more versitile than a regular danian mugic caster with a Talisman of Mandiblor, but choosing between the two of them is a matter of preference.

I'm sorry about missing two card of the weeks. Seeing as it isn't wednesday, I won't call this a Card of the Week, but it will be some card discussion. Let's get started, shall we?

First card I will like to talk about is Royal Mipedian Academy of Melee Arts.

This is a really nifty little card that I like to use. The control decks like danian infection should be a great home for a card like this. If you are up against a serious underworld burn deck, this card will stop your opponent from dealing damage to your creatures, and when the turn is over, you can put this card on your Queen, or other creatures you want to protect, and they will be safe from most of your opponent's big damage dealers :).

Here are two new battlegear cards previewed on tcgplayer.com.

For those of you who don't know what the new key term "Legendary" is yet, let me fill you in. This key word can be put on any card type: creatures, battlegear, locations, mugic, and attacks. You are only allowed one Legendary card in your deck. Think of it like super unique. If I have a legendary attack in my deck, I wouldn't be able to use a Scepter of the Infernal Parasite as well.

So enjoy the cards, comment on them if you want :). I will be posting my last card preview from Comic Con tomorrow.

Here are the five scenarios (which I changed to seven :P), and my answers to what should happen. I will check my answers with the codemasters at New York Comic Con this weekend, and I will give out prizes afterward. If your entry wasn't chosen, it was probably because you didn't leave your username with your post. I know that it may seem like I have had the time to mull over the questions, but I promise that I started looking at these at 7pm today :P.

1. Lordania

"In iron pillar Lord von bloot uses
canon of casualty on engaded intress to counter intress sacrifices her aqua shield
what is the difference before the attack of Lord von bloot?"

-First off, Intress wouldn't be able to sacrifice her battlegear because of the location, so all 20 damage from canon will be calculated. Nice try :P.

2. Kerberos

"So Prince Mundeenu OLD faces off against LVB in a 1vs1 LVB location is flipped and its gothos tower. PM is equipped with a Spectral Viewer and LVB with a destructozooka, he chose fire. LVB attacks first with an ash torrent dealing 25 damage. PM then uses Fanfare of the Vanishing. PM now attacks with Quick Exit (We assume he wins the challenge)how much damage does he deal.""

-Now this is a good question! I actually had to consult my comprehensive rules to get a good idea. It is pretty much a question of if spectral viewer will stop opposing invisibility from negating your invisibility. I believe that mudeenu's invisibility will work, and he will deal 45 damage (20 from strike, 15 from fanfare, and 10 from the attack).

3. Todd Hakusho -you didn't give me a username, but I have your blogger username, so that is close enough :P.

"Now, if you use Najarin Fluidmorpher's Foe to attack another Najarin Fluidmorpher's Foe, and your card gains a Mugic, will this turn continue on into infinity?"

-No, it wouldn't. The way they worded Najarin's ability as "place" a mugic couner on him will prevent him from triggering against himself.

"If a creature uses Canon of casualties on Glost and Appelai uses song of deflection. Does Appelai gain a mugic?"

-This is another good question, and I might get this one wrong too :P. I am going to say yes, because Appelai is worded as " When a Warbeast you control becomes the target of a Mugic or ability". I believe that because of that when, as soon as your warbeast is targeted, Appelai triggers, so even though it wasn't the target when the canon resolves, Appelai's ability will still work.

5. KnucklesE

"Lets say you were facing BigPanda's nimmie. What is the maximum amount of stats and energy that Nimmie could gain?"

-This isn't really a situation, more of a hypothetical. I couldn't tell you what the maximum is, because the maximum will depend on your opponent having a deck that would actually help your Illexia, it wouldn't make much sense to go looking for it :P.

"I pull Trills of Diminution on Fivarth with Challor. Would that work?"

-Nope :P. You wouldn't be able to play Trills of Diminution because Fivarth can't be targeted to begin with.

7. Gobliin

"Anger'Kreem is Batteling Chaor (or any other creature)and it has 4 mugic counters. Anger use Swarming Destruction (who should do 0) but use is ability to do 25."

-No, the Swarming Destruction's dealing 0 ability will supersede Anger's ability.

Chaotic Card of the Week-February 4

This week's card is Supercooled Rain:

For five build points, Supercooled Rain is a really costly attack, but for dealing 40 damage, and making your opponent lose 4 mugic counters, some players think it is worth the cost. Playing this attack early on will effectively shut down a few of your opponent's mugic cards for the rest of the match. Many decks rely on have an exact number of mugic counters to play their cards, and usually don't have to many mugic counters to pay for anything else.

There is no doubt that Supercooled Rain is good, it is just a matter of whether or not if it is worth the price of 5 build points.

Chaotic Card of the Week-January 28

This week's card is Brimflame.

Brimflame has been a fun underworlder to play with for a while now. I have seem him played effectively in numerous underworld decks for a while now, so I feel that Brimflame deserves some praise. With a whepcrack you have a creature with 65 energy, two elements, 115 power, and fire 10. Who wouldn't want that in their deck?

Of course, the big problem with Brimflame is that if he loses his battlegear, he loses all of his fire 10, or fire 5 if you used another battlegear. If you can keep the battlegear on him, he is a huge threat. If you lose it, you might be in a little bit of trouble. The good news is that most decks outside of other underworld decks don't have battlegear distruction, so you should be good :).

Chaotic Card of the Week-January 21

This week's card is Ice Sheet :).

When this card first came out, most people probably didn't find a use for it. But that was back in the good old days of our first attempts at Gan'Trak armies, Bladez builds, and other various decks. We have all become well acquainted with Rise of the Oligarch, and I am sure many of you have already figured out how I am going to explain how to use it in this little segment.

The key is fluidmorphers. Although most fluidmorphers are far from the types of creatures you would like to be offensive with, there are a few creatures like Nunk'worn, that towards the end of a match will have more counters that you know what to do with, and with Ice Sheet, you will be putting those oncec useless counters to good use.

So, like always, please rate Ice Sheet out of ten, :).

Chaotic Card of the Week-January 14

This week's card is Hune Paltanin :)

You might have noticed that I have a little fun in photoshop with this card. I made it foil-y :P.

Anyway, on to the card itself. With two mugic counters, Hune Paltanin is a somewhat strong mugic caster for your back row. She isn't much of a fighter, not even a little, but her ability makes up for it. Overworld decks aren't as widespread as they could be, which is great for a player who chooses to use a Hune Paltanin. Every time your opponent wants to cast a mugic, or play a mugic ability, you get 10 points of healing to protect your creatures.

In an underworld match, all of their damage dealing mugic deals 10 less, and ulmars are next to useless as long as Hune Paltanin is on the board. Mugic is universal. Every deck runs it, so unless you are playing another overworld deck, you are probably going to get upwards of 60 points of healing in a match thanks to her, and that is on top of the two mugic counters she has on her!

Chaotic Card of the Week-January 7

This week's card is Skeletal Springs :).

This card is a really nifty and interesting counter to the Fluidmorphing decks out there. It's interesting because it powers up water attacks, but it also shuts down an ability that is centered around water. It's nifty because it it one of the only cards that powers up attacks of a certain element without lowering the damage from another elemental type attack. So if you are running a deck that uses both water and earth attacks, you wouldn't play Everrain, but Skeletal Springs would be a much better choice.

This card is a bit of a double edge sword though. Skeltal Springs gives any creature with the Water element Water 5, without lowering the damage of other attacks that your opponent might have. So if your opponent has the water element as well, both of you will both be on equal ground.

Would you believe Iparu is in the Nebres card?

Well it's true! Nebres's card has a long and interesting story of tragedy, friendship, and teamwork that I think all of you guys should know about. Ed Nebres is an artist who works for 4kids Entertainment as an artist, and has also done some of the art on our chaotic cards. One day, he had a stroke which really impacted the rest of the art team. All of his friends got together to work on this card and its art as a sort of "get well soon" card. If you own on of these cards, you will notice that the artist's name is "Ed's friends".

Chaotic Card of the Week-January 2

Happy new year to all of you! Holidays usually mess with my calendar, so I forgot about the CCTW, but I'll fill you guys in right now!

This week I chose Phobia Plates

I have been looking at Phobia Plates for some time now, and it is an interesting piece of battlegear. This card defeats decks like my Clodor deck by shutting them off at their source: challenges. A number of decks use challanges right now like stat drain decks, or even most other decks use at least a few attacks with challenges.

Its second ability is a little more deck specific. You will mostly see damage dealing mugic in underworld deck, but more and more generic mugic, and mugic in other tribes are getting in on the action. Cards like Casters' Warsong, Psionic Serenade, and Prelude to Dominance are seeing more play now-a-days, and this card give your creatures a good defense against them.

It looks like the third piece of art won the art vote with almost half of the entire votes! But look, our card is empty!

It is up to you guys to fix that! In this round of Community-Make-A-Card, I want all of you to make this creature's average stats, elements, creature type, and text box. Here is how it will work: you send me a PM labeled "Community Make-A-Card" or something like that so I know what the PM is for, and you tell me how you think we should make this card. I will take the best few ideas that are submitted and we will vote on which ones we think are the best.

Remember, this portion of the Make a Card is for the functionality of the card only. Do not send me a name for the creature, or any flavor text. We will be adding those in later.

Also, try not to make your creature over powered. No one really wants to have a large hulk of a creature that can't be beat. Be creative, and try to stay true to the art of the creature.

To make things interesting, I will be giving away free OP cards to whoever makes it to the voting round. I will be judging on creativity, ingenuity, and most importantly, balanced.

To give you guys an idea of balanced...
-Anything with more than 3 mugic counters is pushing it
-Be careful with giving a creature with multiple high stats, try to limit those to one or two
-If you feel that your creature is too strong, think of a weakness. Exhaust and recklessness are two common examples of weaknesses that balance a card, but remember that you aren't limited to only those!
-Also think hard about how many elements you give him. We don' need a completely superior Heptadd walking around in he mipedian desert!
-Try to stay within the flavor of the mipedian tribe. You can try to go in a new direction, that is encouraged, but try not to make a this card's ability look like it should go in another tribe :).

Chaotic Card of the Week-December 24

This week's card is Vial of Liquid Thought.

When I first saw this card I knew I would have some fun with it. Attack control is a huge factor in this game. There is a reason why I chose H'earing before: having as much control as you can is important. Weather it is changing your opponent's hand, or it is getting your own strong attacks back.

The new three build point attacks are seeing a lot more play lately, and they are so expensive that you can't play more than a few in a deck, but when you use them, they are a game turner. Having another one of those attacks to throw at your opponent may be the difference between winning and losing a game.

Double Trouble?

I think a few people already posted about this over at the main forums, but I want to compare the "twin" sisters from the new set, Aivenna and Nivenna.

First off, you can see that the two names are only on letter off, the color of their skin switches with the color of their hair, their poses are mirror versions of each other, and both feature a famous creature from a the base set in the background, but how else are they similar?

One is the classic fighter: high energy, and something to power its attacks, and the other is the classic support creature: low energy, large amount of mugic counters and a mugic ability.

Nivenna has pretty high wisdom, not too many underworlders have as high of an intellengence. That is pretty overworld-y of her. Not to mention the fact that her ability powers up your creatures instead of hurting your opponent's. That is also pretty uncharacteristical for an underworlder.

There are a few other obvious similarities with the creatures. They have the same power and wisdom. Aivenna as two forms of Outperform 5, while Nivenna gives creatures you control an element 10 of your choice, which is sort of like having two element 5's. Then there is the mugical difference. Nivenna has 3 counters, which is the largest amount a creature has been given so far, and Aivenna has the lowest amount of mugic counters.

Their abilities reflect off of each other as well. Nivenna powers up all of your warriors, and Aivenna's support ability only works if you have a muge. Doesn't that seem weird? These two creatures seem to be made to be put in the same army, but because of their Loyalty, they aren't able to. It is possible that they are hinting at a possible way to bypass Loyalty in the future, or they might just be messing with us. Who knows?

These creatures seem to work in opposite directions, but also seem to want to work together. Any thoughts?
